Electricity Tariff in Karnataka as of March 2016

Domestic consumers (rural): The tariff for the monthly consumption of up to 30 units is increased from ₹2.60 per unit to ₹2.90 per unit and for consumption between 31 and 100 units the tariff is increased from ₹3.70 per unit to ₹4.10 per unit.

The tariff for the monthly consumption of 100-200 units is increased from ₹5.10 to ₹5.60 per unit and for consumption above 200 units per month, the tariff is increased from ₹5.90 to ₹ 6.40 per unit.

How to Calculate kWh or 1 Unit of Electricity Consumption

Energy = Power * Time or E = Watt * Time

When we say we have consumed 1 unit of electricity, that means we have consumed 1kWhr of electrical energy.

1 Unit = kilowatt hour. i.e. 1 Unit = 1kWhr

Example 1: Suppose if you use 10 watts of a lamp for 100 hours, the electricity consumed will be 1000 watt hour. That is 1kWhr, nothing but 1 Unit of Electrical Energy.

Example 2: suppose you have a bulb of 100 watts and it lights for 15 hours a day,30 days a month then the energy consumed is = 100*15*30=45000 watt hours= 45 kWh or 45 units.

Example 2: suppose you have a 22 inch LED TV in your classroom which consumes 55 watts and it is switched on for 8 hours a day, 25 days a month then the energy consumed is = 30*8*25=6000 watt-hours = 6 kWh or 6 units.

Example 3: So the electricity bill per month for 22-inch monitor in school is Rs 6 units*2.90= Rs 17.4 (or Rs 20 approximately) (Electricity rate will go up above Rs 5 per unit if you consume above 100 units per month)
